Invitation to an input meeting - Establishment of a new research centre in the field of energy and transport
The Research Council has announced funding for new Research Centres for Environmentally Friendly Energy (FMEs). FMEs enable long-term research efforts in key energy areas.
Read more about the FME centres and the funding model further down the page.
The Institute of Transport Economics (TØI), the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Smart Innovation Norway want to establish an FME that focuses on the integration between zero-emission solutions in the transport sector and the electricity sector up to 2030 and beyond to 2050.
The centre will research technologies, concepts and algorithms that can contribute to a user-friendly, cost-effective, robust and sustainable energy infrastructure for electricity-based energy for the transport sector. We are in dialogue with several research institutes for participation and a number of user partners.
At this meeting we will inform about the plans for the application.
Potential user partners are invited to provide prepared input (see agenda) on the challenges of integrating the transport sector into the electricity system and on the research activities of such a centre.
We also wish to solicit interest in participating in the application.
Practical info:
Date: 16 February
Time: 10:00-14:00. A simple lunch will be served

What is a Clean Energy Research Centre?
The Centres for Environmentally Friendly Energy Research (FMEs) carry out long-term research aimed at renewable energy, energy efficiency, CO2 management and social sciences.
The centres must have the potential for innovation and value creation. The research is carried out in close collaboration between research groups, industry and public administration.
International cooperation and researcher training are important tasks for the centres, which are established for a period of up to eight years (5 + 3).
On the establishment of FMEs from 2025
The call for new FMEs is divided into two parts. The first part is the submission of an outline for an FME with a deadline of 10 May 2023.
The second part is the submission of a full application with a deadline of 15 November. In order to participate in the second part, applicants must have participated in part 1.
The successful centres will be established from 01.01.2025 and funded for 5+3 years. The last 3 years are subject to a positive mid-term evaluation.
The funding model is such that the Research Council will provide NOK 2 for every NOK 1 of co-funding and own contribution in hours from user partners.
The minimum funding from the Research Council is NOK 120 million for all eight years, or NOK 15 million per year.
User partners must then fund a total of NOK 60 million (NOK 7.5 million/year), divided between co-funding and own contribution in hours.
